Could Cyber-attacks Shut Down US Nuclear Power Plant. It may be happening in INDIA.
It was not so long ago that we thought our critical infrastructure such as nuclear generating stations are protected. In particular, safe from cyber-attacks. Even though this may be the case in US in other parts of the world this is a real threat.
It appears that India’s largest nuclear power plant was hit by a cyberattack on or around Oct 19, 2019. The plant is shut-down and it is suspected that the root cause behind Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant is cyber-attack. It also seems that authorities were alerted in advance of the attack by cyber-security contractors.
There are now updated reports claiming that the incident was not as big as originally reported and that the malware only infected an administrative workstation. “The investigation revealed that the infected PC belonged to a user who was connected in the internet network used for administrative purposes. This is isolated from the critical internal network” the utility said in a statement.

There are still many unanswered questions and if it can happen in India, US is not safe and its plants may be a target. We hope that our officials are taking things more seriously and are being proactive about these matters.
